Reading the musky and powdery family

Musk is the quiet base of a large share of perfumes, and in a modern perfume it is a synthetic note. Powdery names a soft, dry, cosmetic effect that can come from violet, iris root, heliotrope or musk itself. Aldehydic and soapy name the sparkling, clean effect of aldehydes.

The notes that recur most among these eight perfumes: musk (7), mandarin orange (5), sandalwood (5), cedarwood (3), amber (3) and violet (3). The accords the brand names most for them: musky (5), powdery (4), citrus (3), woody (3) and fruity (2).

Choosing within the family

Hera is the violet and lavender one. Ether is the soapy one, built on aldehydes and musk. Asteria pairs a powdery base with sandalwood, Orpheus pairs powder with sandalwood and cedarwood. Nyx is powdery and woody, Icarus and Persephone are musky with fruit, Ares is musky with citrus.
